The kitchen was the first place I learned what my life was.
Not “home.” Not “school.” Not “childhood.” Those were words that belonged to other people—people I would never meet, living lives I couldn’t imagine. For me, there was only work. Heat. Rules.
The kitchen existed in layers of sensation that pressed into my memory like brands burned into flesh. The stone floor stayed perpetually damp near the wash basins, where water sloshed over the edges no matter how carefully we carried the buckets. My bare feet knew every slick patch, every treacherous puddle that could send a careless servant sprawling. Near the ovens, those same stones turned gritty with ash and flour dust that settled like snow that never melted, grinding beneath our soles with each step. It didn’t matter how much we swept or how many times Mother made me haul the heavy brush across those stones until my arms ached and my small hands blistered—there was always something stuck underfoot. Always some reminder that even the floor we walked on wasn’t ours. The house owned everything, including the dirt beneath our feet, and it would continue owning us even when we collapsed into sleep.
