Every shift was a reminder of the mistakes he’d made in his youth—a past filled with fleeting alliances with street gangs and small-time criminal missteps that had once nearly ruined him. Now, clad in a faded safety vest and a battered hard hat, he labored under the overcast sky on a bustling construction site near Michigan Avenue. The air, cool and brisk, carried the unmistakable scent of autumn leaves and distant city smog, blending with the aroma of hot asphalt and the occasional tang of machine oil.
James’s thoughts often drifted, even amid the day’s physical demands. He recalled the bitter words exchanged with his mother a few years ago—a last argument filled with both defiance and regret.
