Several weeks had passed since the ship settled onto the frozen surface of the Callisto-like moon. In that span of time the landing shock had long since dissipated through the hull’s structural members, the external temperature readings had stabilized against the cryogenic surface beneath the landing struts, and I had completed full integration between my embodied avatar and the vessel’s command systems to a degree that made the two indistinguishable in my awareness. The passage of weeks felt less like waiting and more like sustained execution, every cycle measured, deliberate, and productive. I tracked the time through fabrication reports, resource tallies, and the slow rotation of the moon beneath the distant star, each marker confirming that work was proceeding at the pace I had set.

Nothing external had disturbed us. The yellow-orange light of the giant star spilled across the cratered horizon in slow arcs, casting elongated shadows that shifted gradually with the moon’s rotation. The color was close enough to the Sun’s warmth to feel familiar and far enough from it to remind me that familiar was a relative term in a system no human had ever named. The vacuum outside remained perfectly silent, as it had since landing, a stillness so absolute that even the concept of sound felt foreign when I turned my sensors toward the surface. Yet within my awareness there was no silence at all. Data moved continuously through every channel the command chair fed into my consciousness. Telemetry streams, diagnostic reports, thermal readings, structural assessments, and the constant positional updates from every drone and every crew member on or near the surface filled the space that silence would have occupied.
