Adelwen stands before a polished silver mirror while candles catch in her copper hair and in the silver trees embroidered across her midnight-blue gown. Sula adjusts the final details, but no careful pin, pendant, or fold can settle the thoughts Adelwen must carry into the court.
The chapter stays close to Adelwen’s private experience. Her nerves are real, even when the airy and scattered court mask she has learned to wear suggests otherwise. Preparation means deciding what the room will be allowed to see, what scrutiny may uncover, and whether she can enter the evening as more than the role others expect her to perform.
A Princess Behind the Court Mask
Adelwen is an adult Donnagarian royal woman with Eastern Wood Elf lineage, pointed ears, copper hair, and blue-green eyes that seem to change with the firelight. Her gala ensemble is refined rather than ornamental: midnight-blue silk, silver tree embroidery, bell-shaped sleeves, an elven-silver necklace, and an inherited pendant. The ivory fan in her hands becomes another piece of the performance, something delicate enough to conceal tension without erasing it.
Sula, her chief lady-in-waiting, understands more than Adelwen says aloud. Their closeness is practical and affectionate. Sula’s work in the chamber gives Adelwen the room to breathe, while her perceptive presence keeps the scene from becoming a solitary portrait. The result is not glamour for its own sake. Every polished detail carries the pressure of being observed.
What It Means to Be Seen
Adelwen’s concern about Kevin Drayton does not turn the chapter into a completed romance. He is not present in the dressing chamber or the royal corridor. Her memories remain measured: library conversations, respectful distance, and the rare feeling that someone has listened closely enough to hear the intelligence beneath her public mask.
That possibility makes the evening more dangerous, not less. Attention at court can become rumor, leverage, or judgment before either person has decided what a connection means. Adelwen must separate private hope from the story others may try to write for her.
Brandela’s Counsel
Queen Mother Brandela receives Adelwen in a private chamber, not a throne room. The setting matters. Brandela’s authority does not need spectacle, and her questions are gentle without being soft. She reads the strain beneath Adelwen’s performance and gives her space to answer directly.
Adelwen’s honesty changes the balance of the chapter. She does not make a grand declaration or surrender her future to court expectation. Instead, she names what she values: conversation, respect, and the experience of being treated as a thinking person rather than a decorative princess. Brandela offers her blessing while warning that the court will still watch, interpret, and interfere.
A Decision Before the Ballroom
The chapter’s final movement leads Adelwen away from public light and into the House Donovan Catacombs. The ancient stone is reverent rather than haunted. In that private place, family memory and responsibility press against the choice waiting above.
Adelwen does not end Chapter 1 with a dance, an engagement, or a promised future. The ballroom remains beyond the threshold. What she gains is quieter and more important: the decision to meet the evening as herself, aware of the scrutiny and unwilling to let it make the choice for her.
