The metallic taste of recycled air hung in underground passages where millions of souls moved like blood cells through the arteries of civilization, each person absorbed in their own small universe of concerns and aspirations.

Remote wilderness areas lay undisturbed under vast skies, their silence broken only by the whisper of wind through ancient trees and the distant hum of aircraft traversing predetermined flight paths.
