The pain arrived without announcement. It did not build or warn or offer a single merciful second to brace. It detonated behind my sternum like a charge buried in bone, and the gasp that tore from my throat was not a sound I chose to make. My body seized against the restraints. The meditation I had held for six disciplined hours shattered into jagged nothing, and the monitors flanking my chair began to scream before I fully understood what was happening to me. I understood a heartbeat later. The crushing pressure wrapped my chest like a vise forged from gravity itself, grinding deeper, tightening past the threshold where discomfort became damage. The agony radiated outward in spokes, lancing down both arms, climbing through the tendons of my jaw, pooling behind my eyes. My vision tunneled even with my lids shut, the darkness behind them narrowing to a corridor that had only one destination.
This was a heart attack. The recognition landed with clinical detachment, as though one part of my mind had stepped outside the catastrophe to label it while the rest drowned. I had funded cardiac research programs across three moons. I had read the literature, approved the equipment budgets, watched demonstration feeds of resuscitation protocols performed on tissue samples and cadavers and patients who were not me. None of that mattered now. Knowledge collapsed under the weight of a body deciding it was finished, and in one grim, bitter flash, I thought: after everything, after the planning and the money and the years I clawed back from entropy, I am going to die strapped to a chair under fluorescent lights in my own laboratory. Then alarms swallowed the thought, and hands descended, and the world became voltage and shouting and the taste of copper in my mouth.
